1. Agreement
These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Jookwang Jung, the developer of Pauseway (“Pauseway,” “we,” “us”). They apply to the Pauseway iPhone app and its extensions (the “App”) and to pauseway.me (the “Site”).
Because you get the App from Apple’s App Store, Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (“Apple EULA”) also applies. These Terms add to the Apple EULA; if they conflict, the Apple EULA controls to the extent of the conflict. Our Privacy Policy explains how information is handled.
By downloading or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please don’t use the App.
2. Who may use Pauseway
Pauseway 1.0 is a self-control tool for adults who choose it for themselves. You must be old enough to agree to these Terms in your country, or have a parent or guardian’s permission. Paid subscriptions require you to be able to make purchases with your Apple Account.
3. What Pauseway does — and what it relies on
Pauseway lets you choose apps through Apple’s Screen Time picker, places an Apple system shield on them, and lets you unlock a measured Social Pass. It depends on Apple’s Family Controls, Managed Settings, and Device Activity frameworks.
- Pauseway works only while you grant it Screen Time access. You can remove that access or delete the App at any time, which removes its shields.
- Apple controls how shields look and behave, how usage is measured, and when iOS reports that a limit was reached. Apple may change these systems, and they can occasionally be delayed or fail. We do our best to keep Pauseway working, but we can’t guarantee that every shield, threshold, or notification will happen exactly on time.
- Apple does not allow apps to reopen another app from a Screen Time token, so after a pass starts you return to the app yourself.
- The minutes shown per app are produced by Apple and may differ slightly from other Screen Time views.
4. Social Passes
- A Social Pass allows the length you selected — 10, 20, or 30 minutes — of combined use across the apps you paused, as measured by Apple Screen Time. Time outside those apps does not count.
- When the allowance is used, or the pass reaches the end of its time window, iOS reapplies the shields. Unused minutes do not carry over.
- Changing the pass length in Settings applies to your next pass, not one already running.
- You can end a pass early from the App at any time.
5. Free plan and rewarded ads
- On the Free plan, each Social Pass is unlocked by watching a rewarded ad served by Google.
- A pass is granted only when Google confirms that the reward was earned. If an ad is closed early, skipped, fails to load, or is unavailable, no pass is granted and your apps stay paused. That is intentional, not a defect.
- Ads are provided by third parties. We don’t control their content and don’t guarantee that an ad will always be available. Rewards have no cash value and cannot be transferred.
- You must not use bots, emulators, scripts, or other means to fake ad views or rewards.
6. Pauseway Pro subscription terms
- Plans. Pauseway Pro is offered as an auto-renewing weekly or yearly subscription. The price and billing period are shown in the App, in your local currency, before you confirm. Taxes may apply.
- Payment. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
- Automatic renewal. Your subscription renews automatically for the same period and price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple Account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
- Cancel anytime. Manage or cancel in iPhone Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, or in the App Store under your account. Canceling stops the next renewal; you keep Pro until the end of the period you already paid for.
- Refunds. Apple handles all billing and refunds under its policies. You can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue refunds directly.
- Price changes. If the price changes, Apple notifies you in advance and, where required, asks for your consent before you are charged the new price.
- Restore. Use Restore Purchases in the App to recover Pro on a new or reset iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Plan status offline. If the App cannot confirm your subscription for three days, it returns to the Free plan until it can check again or you restore purchases.
- Family Sharing. Pauseway Pro is not shared through Apple Family Sharing.
- Changes to features. We may improve or change Pro features. If we make a change that materially reduces what Pro includes, we will tell you in the App, and you can cancel.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use Pauseway to monitor, restrict, or control another person’s device without their knowledge and lawful consent;
- copy, modify, reverse engineer, or create derivative works of the App, except as the law expressly allows;
- interfere with the App, its ads, or its subscription checks, or attempt to obtain Pro without paying; or
- use the App or Site in a way that breaks the law or these Terms.
8. Ownership and license
Pauseway, including its design, text, graphics, and software, is owned by us and protected by intellectual property laws. Subject to these Terms and the Apple EULA, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App on Apple devices you own or control. If you send us ideas or feedback, you allow us to use them without obligation to you.
Other companies’ names and app icons that appear in screenshots belong to their owners and are used only to illustrate apps a person might choose to pause.
9. Third-party services
Pauseway relies on Apple (Screen Time, App Store, StoreKit), Google (AdMob and its consent tools), and RevenueCat (subscription verification). Their services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies, and we are not responsible for them.
10. Not medical or professional advice
Pauseway is a general wellbeing and productivity tool. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, or prevent any condition, including addiction. If you are worried about your health or compulsive behavior, please talk to a qualified professional.
11. Disclaimers
To the extent the law allows, the App and Site are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don’t promise that Pauseway will reduce your screen time, be uninterrupted or error-free, or meet every need. Some jurisdictions don’t allow these exclusions, so some may not apply to you.
12. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or opportunities, arising from your use of or inability to use Pauseway. Our total liability for any claim relating to Pauseway is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for Pauseway Pro in the 12 months before the claim or USD 50.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or your statutory rights as a consumer.
13. Apple-specific terms
- These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the App and its content.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App.
- If the App fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the App.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims relating to the App, including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, and consumer protection claims.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for investigating and resolving any claim that the App infringes someone’s intellectual property rights.
- You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as “terrorist supporting,” and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
14. Ending use
You can stop using Pauseway at any time by deleting the App and canceling any subscription in your Apple Account. We may suspend or end your access if you seriously or repeatedly breach these Terms. Sections that by their nature should continue — such as ownership, disclaimers, and limitation of liability — survive.
15. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Subject to the next paragraph, any dispute relating to Pauseway will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California, and you and we consent to their jurisdiction.
If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country or state where you live, and nothing in these Terms prevents you from bringing a claim in your local courts where that law allows it. Before filing a claim, please email us so we can try to resolve the issue informally; most problems can be fixed quickly that way.
16. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as Pauseway changes. We will revise the effective date above and, for material changes, let you know in the App or on this page before they take effect. Continuing to use Pauseway after that means you accept the updated Terms.
